The Challenge

HIV/AIDS in Dar es Salaam

Tanzania carries one of Africa's highest HIV burdens. In Dar es Salaam, urban density, poverty, and entrenched stigma create barriers that prevent testing, delay treatment, and push infected individuals out of care.

Our Interventions

What We Do

A comprehensive, person-centred response that addresses both clinical need and social determinants of HIV outcomes.

๐Ÿ”ฌ

Testing & Counselling (HTC)

We run regular community testing events and operate four permanent HTC stations. All testing is voluntary, confidential, and paired with pre- and post-test counselling by trained professionals.

  • Walk-in testing at 4 community health posts
  • Monthly community testing drives in 15 wards
  • Partner notification and couples counselling
  • Referral to government ART clinics within 48h
๐Ÿ’Š

ARV Adherence Support

Starting antiretroviral therapy is only half the battle โ€” staying on it for life is the challenge. Our patient navigators provide structured adherence support, home visits, and reminder systems.

  • Dedicated patient navigator per 30 patients
  • Monthly adherence check-in calls and home visits
  • Pill organiser and digital reminder provision
  • Nutrition counselling to support ARV efficacy

Stigma Reduction & Education

Stigma remains the single largest barrier to HIV testing and treatment in Tanzania. We run structured community dialogues, school-based education, and faith leader engagement programmes.

  • Bi-monthly community dialogue sessions
  • Secondary school HIV literacy curriculum
  • Engagement of 120+ religious and community leaders
  • Swahili radio programming and social media
๐Ÿ˜

Outreach to Key Populations

Certain populations face higher risk and greater barriers. We conduct targeted, non-judgmental outreach to ensure no one is left behind in our response.

  • Peer-led outreach by trained community health workers
  • Safe, confidential access to testing for all
  • Linkage to social protection and legal support services
  • Psychosocial support groups for PLHIV
Our Process

From Identification to Long-Term Care

1

Community Mapping

We identify high-prevalence wards through epidemiological data and deploy community health workers for door-to-door sensitisation and testing referral.

2

Test & Link

Rapid HIV testing is offered on-site. Positive cases are immediately counselled and linked to ART initiation within 48 hours via our government partnership.

3

Adherence & Monitoring

Patients are enrolled in a structured support programme. Monthly viral load proxies and a digital tracking system flag those at risk of dropping out.
